(For Schools) Environmental and Disaster Preparedness Education Program

The Nankai Trough Earthquake occurs approximately every 100 to 150 years.

Preparedness measures for the impending large earthquake are continuing in Muroto City.

 

“How can we protect ourselves from natural disasters?”

 

The Environmental and Disaster Preparedness Education Program, primarily targeting educational institutions in Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark, aims to understand geological activities through experiences and contemplate ways to face natural disasters.

1. Program Details

 

① Muroto Global Geopark Center Self-Guided Tour (about 15 minutes)

 

Geoparks are places where you can truly feel that we live on the Earth. At the Geopark Center, you will learn about the relationship between people and nature through exhibits, using the example of Muroto, Japan.

 

 

 

② Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark Explanation (about 30 minutes)

 

A geoscientist will talk about the formation of Muroto, a place where “the sea and land meet and the Earth is born,” and the lives of the people who live there. The explanation will be tailored to the learning level of the program participants, covering the rich natural resources unique to Muroto, as well as the disasters that people there have to deal with.

 

 

 

③ Walking the Front Lines of Earth’s Creation, Muroto Cape Guide (about 50 minutes)

 

A unique guide will take you around Muroto Cape, a place of scenic beauty selected as one of the New Eight Views of Japan. By learning about the reasons for the unique landscape that catches your eye, such as the crowd of strangely shaped rocks and the impressive Akon tree, you will experience the magnificent story of the Earth.

 

 

 

④ Tour of the Tsunami Evacuation Shelter (30 minutes)

 

Through a tour of Japan’s only tsunami evacuation shelter, you will learn about the disaster prevention efforts underway in Muroto City, which faces the Nankai Trough, and think about how to deal with natural disasters.

 

 
 

2. Program Duration

 

Approximately 3.5 hours (including travel time)

 

※We will adjust the duration of each visit according to the number of visitors, their age, and the schedule.

3. Fees

 

¥3,300 per person (tax included)

 

・The accompanying teachers will be charged the same fee as students (from fiscal year 2021).

・Payment will be made via bank transfer after confirming the number of participants on the day.

・A cancellation fee will be charged for cancellations on the day of the program.

 

 

4. Regarding Transportation between Tour Sites

 

We kindly ask our customers to make arrangements for transportation between the Geopark Center, Muroto Cape, and the tsunami shelter. Depending on the size and number of vehicles, we will provide guidance on parking locations at each tour site.

 

 

5. Response to Rainy Weather

 

Some parts of the guided tours at Muroto Cape and the tsunami shelter are conducted outdoors. However, we can accommodate tours in light rain if participants wear raincoats. If heavy rain is expected to make it difficult to hear, we will discuss and make changes to the tour itinerary accordingly.
