Muroto UGGp Explores Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

Tue, Mar 12, 2024

In an endeavor to promote international exchange and collaboration within the global geopark network, a delegation of Muroto High School students accompanied by the Muroto UGGp Promotion Committee embarked on a journey to explore the captivating landscapes of Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark from February 26th to 29th. This expedition not only facilitated the exchange of knowledge and experiences but also reinforced the shared commitment to preserving and promoting geological heritage worldwide.

After the Muroto delegation was graciously welcomed by the Hong Kong Geopark team and our esteemed hosts from True Light Middle School, the exploration commenced with a visit to the iconic High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung East Country Park, renowned for its scenic beauty and geological wonders. As part of the reservoir’s construction, stone was quarried from the cliffs surrounding the East Dam, revealing globally rare rhyolitic volcanic hexagonal rock columns. This excavation work transformed the site into the best spot to observe this geological marvel up close. The East Dam of High Island Reservoir boasts magnificent uplands, reservoir views, seascape vistas, and various geological structures, making it one of the most popular attractions within the geopark.

Following this enlightening excursion and a highlight of the visit was a traditional dim sum lunch, generously hosted by our counterparts at Hong Kong Geopark. This cultural exchange among the students not only provided a taste of local cuisine but also fostered camaraderie and mutual understanding among participants.

Continuing our exploration, we delved into the geological and cultural richness of Hong Kong, visiting historic villages and engaging in insightful exchanges with local residents. The visit culminated in a vibrant cultural exchange at True Light Middle School, where the Muroto delegation shared insights into the unique features of Muroto Geopark and forged lasting connections with our counterparts.

Reflecting on our journey, we were inspired by the warmth and hospitality of our hosts and the seamless integration of nature conservation and community engagement within Hong Kong Geopark. Our experience reaffirmed the transformative power of international exchange and strengthened our resolve to collaborate with geoparks worldwide.

In conclusion, our exploration of Hong Kong Geopark exemplifies the spirit of international cooperation within the global geopark network. We look forward to further collaborations and exchanges that will enrich our understanding of geological heritage and foster meaningful connections across borders.
